Ydun (1870-1901)

1870-1879

When the Port of Esbjerg opened in 1873 it was the only large port on the west coast of Jutland, and from 1875 DFDS began the service from Esbjerg to England.

DFDS changed port in England from Thameshaven, near London, to Parkeston Quay, Harwich. Gradually, additional routes were started up from Esbjerg: to London, Grimsby, Newcastle, and Hamburg.

After Copenhagen, Esbjerg became the most used port in the DFDS international traffic. In the beginning, livestock was the freight basis for the Esbjerg routes, but this was later replaced by the rapidly growing Danish export of agricultural products.
