Environmental Initiatives

DFDS Environmental Initiatives

At DFDS we’re passionate about giving back to the environment, educating ourselves and our customers on the importance of our surroundings, and enjoying the environment around us. This means we have a range of initiatives, including wildlife watching and sea life workshops with our Ocean Conservationists from ORCA. We’re even working closely with the Ocean Conservation Trust to work towards replacing the abundance of lost seagrass from our British Coastlines, in an attempt to restore CO2 to our environment. Find out more about our initiatives below.

ORCA

Learn about the different marine animals which live in the North Sea and English Channel and see if you can spot them from our ferries. Meet ORCA Ocean Conservationists onboard our Newcastle – Amsterdam and Newhaven – Dieppe ferries from March to September and learn all about the marine environment and the species that live there.

Ocean Conservation Trust

We’re proud to have partnered with the Ocean Conservation Trust, a global charity working towards a vision of a healthy ocean and we want to contribute to it. We’re particularly excited about their Blue Meadows project, which aims to protect, regenerate and restore over 700 hectares of the UK’s seagrass, and we’re delighted to support them doing it. Find out more about the Ocean Conservation Trust and the Blue Meadows project on our dedicated page.

ReSea Project

At DFDS, we have for many years collaborated with organizations that protect life in the sea. One of them is the ReSea Project.

In the period January 2021 - March 2023, ReSea has removed 2,141,051 kg of plastic from seas and rivers, equivalent to 107,052,550 plastic bottles, and this number is increasing all the time. Every piece of plastic that is removed is sorted and redistributed for new purposes.

ReSea is one of only two companies in the world that is certified to DNV's standard for the collection of plastic in seas and rivers, which means that the entire process is well documented and third-party certified. This gives us reassurance that the efforts against plastic pollution make a real difference.
