Riga
Discover Riga with DFDS
Choose between our crossing from Kiel to Klaipeda, Karlshamn to Klaipeda or Kapelskär to Paldiski and visit the largest city in the Baltics, Riga.
Here you will experience a modern mix of Russian and Latvian urban culture, as well as white beaches in the nearby area of Jūrmala. The Latvian capital, with its Renaissance architecture, streets and squares, has a long tradition as a trading centre. Additionally, the Old Town and part of the New Town with its magnificent Art Nouveau buildings are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Art & Culture in Riga
A walk through the new town is mandatory so you can admire the ‘Riga school’ buildings. This style was created by a fusion of Western European and Finnish-Nordic architecture. You can spot particularly impressive buildings on the "Alberta Iela" street from the Akmens bridge. However, the city's architecture is not the only reason why the city was chosen as European Capital of Culture 2014. Fans of the Eastern European way of life come here to experience the Latvian and Russian lifestyle.
Culinary Riga
Spend some time in Riga’s tea rooms, buy marvellously carved matryoshkas in the markets or try the local beer in bars and the traditional Rīgas Melnais Balzams schnapps. The best known are the Aldaris and the Cesu.
Riga and Baltic Castles
If you are looking for tranquillity, you can relax in the largest seaside resort of the Baltic States, Jūrmala, located 10 kilometres away. There’s more than 30km of long white beach and clear water awaits you. In Jūrmala you will discover traditional wooden architecture amid beautiful pine forests.
The most magnificent sight, Rundale Castle is the largest and most complete Baroque ensemble in the country and is certainly worth a visit.
