When the Christmas lights are turned on in the ornate streets in November, you can take the whole family with you to fun winter activities and Christmas fun around the city spaces. Until the New Year, you have ample opportunity to experience a Christmas concert or Christmas theater. The city's many shops and Christmas markets offer atmospheric Christmas shopping, so you can find the perfect Christmas gift.
Christmas Cuisine
During this time of the year, Oslo tempts its visitors with celebratory food, drink and Christmas sweets! In most markets and in different places around the city you can warm yourself with hot drinks, spiced mulled wine, frothy Christmas beer, gingerbread, sweet marzipan and crunchy roasted almonds.
Shopping for Christmas
In the heart of Oslo, at the popular shopping street Karl Johans Gate, from 17 November you can experience an amazing Christmas atmosphere for the whole family.
On the last Sunday in November you can visit Oslo Brukthandelsforening's Christmas market where you will find retro, vintage and antique collectibles. If you prefer modern design, you can experience a Designers' Christmas market at the Norwegian Design and Architecture Center on 1-2 December.
The first two weekends in December, the Norwegian Folk Museum will open its doors to the annual Christmas market where you’ll find over 100 exciting stalls!
Christmas Markets in Oslo
In the days before Christmas Eve, you can visit the Farmer's Big Christmas Market. Participate in the Christmas celebration in a genuine Norwegian style with, among other things, Christmas cookies, lamb racks and mulled wine.
You can also visit the open-air Christmas market Hadeland Glassverk, which is about an hour's drive from Oslo. This is Norway's oldest glass factory that welcomes its visitors in with the lovely smell of homemade Christmas candy and hot drinks. Here you will find a large selection of Christmas decorations, candles, Christmas souvenirs and much more.
Christmas for Children
Oslo has a wide array of entertaining activities on offer for younger members of the family. In the city centre you will find the Spikersuppa skating rink. In Oslo's concert hall you can listen to the ‘Children's Christmas Concert’ and see the performance of the show, ‘Christmas party’. In the beautiful Opera House, let yourself be captivated by a classic Christmas ballet ‘Nutcracker’ or enjoy a theatre play such as ‘Snøfall’ at the Oslo New Theatre.
