Through our Behind Every Journey series, we’re inviting you to look beyond the surface and meet the inspiring people like Jean-Bernard who bring the magic to every voyage.
Today, we’re proud to share his story.

Inspired by a family legacy
Jean-Bernard’s connection to the sea began long before his maritime career. Inspired by tales about his grandfather’s time as a merchant shipping officer navigating the Atlantic, Jean-Bernard grew up dreaming of following in his footsteps. Family ties to Brittany’s coastline and sailing trips with his uncle added to this deep-rooted bond with the ocean.
“We’d reminisce about our origins and recall anecdotes – from laughter to tears. We like to share our history as a respect for our family heritage. And above all, so that these memories don't fall into oblivion.”
But Jean-Bernard’s childhood was also shaped by travel and adventure. When asked what he wanted to be in the future, he always had the same answer—an adventurer. His parents were actively involved in humanitarian efforts, which led him to meaningful journeys and experiences that undeniably influenced not only his career path but also his mindset.
“My parents were part of a group that provided humanitarian aid, bringing medicine and food to Cuba during the American embargo. I also remember visiting orphanages in Turkey. Here, through fun workshops, we taught French to children who were sometimes isolated and had no family.”
These experiences instilled in him a sense of purpose and compassion that would influence his future path.

Continuing a seafaring tradition
Carrying the Viking heritage suggested by his Norman name, Alix, Jean-Bernard has always felt the pull of the ocean. The vivid stories of his grandfather and family trips on the water became a launchpad for his aspirations.
When Jean-Bernard’s grandfather passed away, he left behind a treasure trove of old photographs. Each photo came with a story, and even now, they bring a smile to Jean-Bernard's face.
“When I see the photos in the album, I tell myself that despite the difficult experiences they lived through, they stuck together like brothers. Their smiles and postures show how happy they were at the time,” he reflects. “They didn’t have much, but they had camaraderie—and that was enough.”
These values of teamwork and resilience play a key role in his work today on the Côte d'Opale ferry, where he focuses on creating an atmosphere that reflects the same spirit of kinship and joy.

Leading with heart and purpose
As a business leader, Jean-Bernard’s role goes far beyond managing inventory or overseeing operations. For him, leadership is about building meaningful connections—with his team and with the passengers he serves. He believes that listening forms the foundation of effective management, enabling him to understand and support his staff while also tuning into what passengers truly need.
“I spend a great deal of my time listening to my colleagues and passengers. I think it’s very important to realize that emotions, in general, play a considerable role in today’s business world. Whether that’s towards my colleagues or passengers, it’s very important to give them time,” he explains.
For his team, life at sea brings unique experiences. Recognizing the importance of connection and support, he prioritizes creating a workplace where everyone feels valued and appreciated. His thoughtful leadership ensures his colleagues stay engaged and connected, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and belonging no matter where their work takes them.
“It’s important that we know how to listen to people. That’s my role as manager—listening, reassuring, so that everyone’s life on board go as smoothly as possible.”
Yet, it’s not all work and no play. Jean-Bernard treasures the lighthearted moments shared with his team. One of his favorite memories involves the crew gathering on the stern of the ship before boarding. There, they exchange funny stories and even break into spontaneous dances on the deck—a tradition that strengthens their bond and keeps their spirits high.

Positivity attracts positivity
Jean-Bernard’s dedication to helping others doesn’t end when he steps off the ship; it’s a part of who he is.
Beyond his work on board, he volunteers with Emmaus France, where he serves in the furniture and objects department. Here, he does far more than sell items to individuals in financial difficulty—he creates moments of connection. As in his role with DFDS, Jean-Bernard’s work goes beyond simple transactions. He listens, offers advice, and provides a compassionate presence to those who need it most.
“Listening is very important during moments like these. People need to feel heard and understood,” he shares.
For Jean-Bernard, every interaction is an opportunity to make a difference, whether it’s at sea or within his community. And this work is deeply personal. It reflects the values his parents instilled in him and aligns with his belief in making a positive difference.
Reflecting on his accomplishments, Jean-Bernard often thinks about how proud his grandfather would be to see him face life’s challenges with courage and determination.
“I’m proud of having always taken the risk of daring,” he shares. His advice to colleagues echoes this philosophy. “Step out of your comfort zone. It’s in those moments that good things happen for you.”
Whether on or off the ferry, Jean-Bernard’s life is a testament to the strength of human connection, the willingness to dare, and the belief that positivity attracts positivity.
