DFDS Reducing Food Waste

Join us in our mission to minimise food waste and reduce our impact on the environment. At DFDS, we're dedicated to sustainable practices, and one of our key focuses is reducing food waste across our operations.

Read on the find out about the initiatives we’re weaving into our operations and discover how you can play your part in our journey.

Our initiatives:

  • Menu optimisation: Our culinary team craft menus that prioritise using ingredients efficiently, reducing the likelihood of unused items.
  • Food waste tracking: We implement systems to monitor and track food waste throughout our operations, allowing us to identify areas for improvement and take proactive measures.
  • Creative repurposing: Ours chefs find innovative ways to use the whole ingredient, giving passengers tasty flavours from food that's too often wasted or overlooked.
  • Packaging reduction: We explore eco-friendly packaging alternatives and encourage passengers to opt for minimal packaging or reusable containers whenever possible.

Our targets

By 2025, DFDS aims to achieve a 25% reduction in food waste compared to our 2023 levels. This ambitious goal reflects our commitment to sustainability and driving positive change in the maritime industry.

But what impact will a 25% reduction in food waste really have?
Let’s break it down…

  • Imagine cutting the greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those produced by driving 1,339,175 miles or using 222,510 litres of gasoline in an average passenger vehicle. When we minimize food waste, we're playing a crucial role in reducing methane emissions from decomposing food in landfills.
  • Alternatively, this reduction could power more than 100 homes for an entire year. By conserving energy used in food production, transportation, and disposal, we'd be able to redirect these valuable resources toward sustainable purposes like powering homes with renewable sources.
  • The impact extends to conserving resources such as water, land, and energy, effectively offsetting the environmental impact associated with food production - with the potential to charge more 63,545,024 smartphones.
  • These examples illustrate the far-reaching benefits of reducing food waste, showing how even small changes can have a significant positive impact on the environment and communities.
