What a difference a day makes. Whether it’s a walk in the countryside, a day spent in the city, or a day by the coast, a change of scene does us all good. Why not spend the day across the channel exploring Dunkirk and doing a spot of shopping? Read on to find out more.

Start the day right

Arrive in France

In just two hours arrive in France and hit the open road to explore Dunkirk and the surrounding areas. The centre of Dunkirk sits just a short drive from the port.

Dunkirk’s Beaches

Dunkirk has over 15km of beaches and dunes to take a leisurely stroll. Visit nearby Malo les Bains to see one of the locations for the evacuation of British troops from Dunkirk during WW2. These days it has lines of coloured beach cabins sitting on the sand, plenty of opportunities for water sports and a selection of restaurants and cafes to sample some regional dishes such as Coquilles Saint-Jacques and Normandy Apple Tart.

Local Markets

You can also browse one of the local markets and buy some regional produce – cheeses, wines and breads are available in abundance. Regular markets take place in Place du Général de Gaulle, the Rosendael district and Malo les Bains. Check the local tourist board websites for specific days – there may be some Christmas markets in there too!

Culture Vultures

Back in Dunkirk, history buffs will love the town’s museum which houses an impressive collection of WW2 paraphernalia from the famous Dunkirk Evacuation. The Musée Portuaire is dedicated to Dunkirk’s seafaring history and has several floating exhibits including the Sandettie, a lighthouse ship that would help steer boats safely through the sandbanks off the coast.

Art lovers should visit the LAAC, Place of Contemporary Art and Action, which showcases a range of artwork from international artists and a beautiful sculpture garden.

A climb to the top of the town’s Belltower is a must too. On a clear day it provides panoramic views across the Normandy countryside and English channel.
