The White Cliffs of Dover

On reaching the harbour of Dover, the majestic chalk cliffs on the Dover coast can be seen from afar. In their snow-white splendour, they are one of the country's most spectacular natural phenomena and have symbolised freedom in British history for centuries. Nature lovers in particular will get their money's worth here. On a hike along the cliffs, you can experience the beautiful and historic landscape in all its splendour. The views become even more impressive the higher you hike up the chalk cliffs. The view of the English Channel in the evening sun and the glistening water is very impressive.

Dover cliff walk

The approximately 5 kilometre long hiking trail leads from the eastern edge of Dover over the cliffs to the South Foreland lighthouse, which was the first in the world to be equipped with an electric light. From there, walkers can enjoy the beautiful view over the impressive landscape, Dover harbour and the English Channel. A picnic overlooking the sea is a unique experience. On a clear day, you can even see as far as France. In summer, rare wild flowers, birds and butterflies can be observed here.

Dover Castle - a landmark of British history

One of the largest castle complexes in Europe is located at the narrowest point of the English Channel in Dover and is the perfect place to discover the history of England. Perched high up on the chalk cliffs of Dover, it is the best-preserved medieval castle complex in the whole of Europe alongside the Tower of London. The castle grounds themselves offer unrivalled views of the English Channel. The castle is also home to the best-preserved Roman lighthouse. A tour of the tower gives visitors an insight into court life in the Middle Ages. The castle's royal gardens are the perfect place for an outdoor picnic.
